About J.A. Grifols

In 1951, Jose Antonio Grifols Lucas developed the plasmapheresis technique, which consists of separating blood plasma from whole blood and returning the blood cells to the donor – a safe procedure that remains in widespread use today. Plasmapheresis greatly increased the frequency of plasma donations worldwide. Thanks to his efforts and the generosity of donors, patients with chronic and rare conditions around the world are able to access life-saving plasma medicines.

His early efforts, which established a way for people to donate plasma safely and more frequently, continues to help ensure that enough plasma is available to produce lifesaving plasma-derived medicines that help treat rare and chronic conditions. Dr. Grífols cared deeply about donor health and well-being and this foundation is advancing his vision as a way to continue his legacy.
